Picture this: it's a warm sunny Saturday morning and you and your friends decide that it would be a lovely day to play a bit of golf.

You place your golf ball on the tee and ready your golf club. You swing it through the air with a satisfying whoosh. Your club face connects with the ball, which flies through the air an lands just short of the green. Your friend does the same, but oh no, their ball lands right next to yours.

Now you're in a predicament. If you swing your club, you may end up knockng your friend's ball too.
What to do?

Just as you're pondering this, your friend comes over, picks up their ball and places a small, flat object on the grass in its place. The problem has now been solved, and you can play on without worryng about hitting your friend's ball by accident.

After you've taken your second stroke, you turn to your friend and ask what he has put down. He tells you that it is a golf ball marker.

So, what is a golf ball marker?

  • Golf ball markers are used to mark the postion of a player's ball.
  • They are typically small, flat objects (coins are popular choice).
  • This means that you can mark where your ball was without obstructing another player's line.
  • Golf markers are also useful if you want to pick up your ball and clean it during play.

Wondering how to use a golf ball marker? Here's a quick guide...

How to use a golf ball marker

  • You can use anything you like as a ball marker, but flat objects (such as a coin or poker chip) are the most common choice.
  • Place down the golf ball marker to show where your golf ball was sitting.
  • The ball marker is usually placed either in front or behind the golf ball, however some players prefer to place it directly on the spot where the ball originally sat.
  • Your ball may be marked and lifted if its position would interfere with another player's stroke.
  • If you don't pay attention when placing down the golf ball marker, you could be penalized. If you misplace the marker and move your ball to a different spot, you'll have to take a penalty stroke.

Follow these three steps:

  1. Place the marker.

After you have taken your turn and your golf all has come to a complete halt, then you can place your marker down. Place th marker directly behind your golf ball. Once the marker is down, you can now pick up your ball.
  2. Wait your turn.

After placing the marker, wait for your next turn. Usually, a maker is placed down to prevent interference with another player's stroke.
  3. Put your ball back down.

Once the other player has taken their stroke, and their ball has stopped moving, then you can place your golf ball back where it was. Place the ball in front of the marker to make sure that the ball is set into its original spot. Once the ball is placed down, you may remove the marker.
