What's the Best Golf Ball for Me?
While golf balls are far from the most expensive piece of equipment in the average golf bag, the ball you play can make a huge difference to your game. That's why we think it's important to know how to choose a golf ball that will help you get the most out of your swing. When deciding what golf balls to buy, you might just want to pick the biggest brand on the market and hope for the best. But, before you think about style, the first things to consider are:
- your handicap
- your swing speed
- number of layers

How do I choose the right golf ball for my swing speed?
Slow swing speed
Typically, slower swing speeds work best with lower compression balls. This can help you get the maximum distance out of your swing.
High swing speed
For players with a higher swing speed, high compression golf balls are great for accuracy as well as distance. Combining low compression balls with a high swing speed can result in too much spin, so stay clear of these.

How Many Layers Should My Golf Ball Have?
Typical entry-level balls will have a core (mantle), with a single urethane or Surlyn cover, and this is known as a 2-piece (or 2 layer) ball. These balls are suitable for beginners and some mid-level golfers.
A 3-piece ball is therefore good for mid to low handicappers who want good spin control, enjoy a softer feel around the greens, and don’t lose balls often.
4 and 5-piece golf balls are softer again, offering higher levels of spin and control; however, they will travel less distance than 2 or 3-layer balls, so you will need a very fast swing speed to achieve a good distance off the tee. These golf balls are very much suited to low handicappers and scratch golfers who really like to shape their shots, i.e. draws and fades.
